So, this last week I was digging through all my old sketchbooks to find stuff for my portfolio and found some sketches I don’t think I’ve posted before. Sooooo here they are! Also, depending on how the next… day and a half goes, there might be another unfortunate hiatus coming up, just because I’m in the final stretch of school and things are getting craaaaazy.
So apologies in an advance for that.
Anyway, about these sketches. I think I had at one point decided that Veronica is actually pretty into horror and other scary story stuff. So I had a thought that she would attempt to tell Ferdinand (or whoever) a scary story, but just kind of… sucks at it.
Second one is just Ferdinand being cute.
The third one, I guess, is an old picture of older Veronica that I forgot I had drawn.
And the last set is just some doodles I did up for Veronica. I actually have a few pages like this floating around, cause I just like doodling her from time to time.
So yeah, enjoy~
EDIT: Caption: “And I still don’t know how to cook!”
A while ago, someone had asked for an older version of Veronica on the headshots I had started for Ferdinand and Sigfried (which are sitting in unfinished limbo at the moment). Well after I started that older doodle of Veronica, I went ahead and sketched her up. I started this a while ago, but only finished this sketch last night, on request of a friend when we were talking about it.
So yeahhhhh Older Veronica
Figured I’d share these : ) These are the old versions of Pages 1 and 2, before I went into rewrites. Originally, I was gong to draw all the pages by hand, scan them in and multiply the line layer over the colour layer. However, this became cumbersome and the pages had a tendency of smearing, as I only planned on doing them in pencil. I always covered the pages with acetate to keep them from smudging, but it was all a lot more trouble than it was worth, I guess.
That and I had a tendency to work slower in my sketchbook (I had one dedicated wholly to comic pages), so that was a bit alarming to me. I wanted to pump out material faster and I found working digitally helped with that, hence the change. Still, thought I’d show you.
As you can see, Mira and Janey are present here and more people of the village were shown. I miss the old drawings of the various places in Morrell, but more or less, didn’t feel they were necessary.
I did one up for Ferdinand, sooooo here’s one for Sigfried : )
Doodley doo from class the other day.
Fast forward a few years. The boys decided to go out for Sigfried’s first drink. The young man cannot hold his liquor. At all.
F: “I cannot believe it. You only had one drink!”
S: “Y-you know… I can *hic* still get you… *hic* that hair cut…”
F: “Not now. I gotta get you home.”
S: “… But I don’t wanna go home… We’re having so *hic* much fun… I mean… Hey… L-let’s get… tattoos. Wanna *hic* get tattoos?”
F: “No Sigfried. You’re going home.”
S: “You can get… a table… tattooed. Don’t you like tables..?”
F: “Tables?”
S: “Y-yeah… You said you’re favourite *hic* animal was a *hic* table.”
F: “….Okay, you need to get home.”
S: “Where’s my *hic* jacket? Did you eat it again?”
F: “What do you mean ‘again’?”
No more drinking for Sigfried. He probably ends up with the worst hangover ever from that one drink. Poor boy.
Lol I still don’t know. I’m gonna go to bed soon I think : P
“Oh, come on! You work too much! Skipping just one class can’t possibly hurt you THAT much, right?”
Testing out that new brush setting still, here is a doodle of like… a teenage Ferdinand and Sigfried. Sigfried is still in military school of course and Ferdinand has come back into town for a visit, hoping to get his friend to cut class so they can hang out for a little while longer than waiting until Sigfried is dismissed.
Sigfried’s hair always stays the same, except for maybe a slight recede in his hair line when his older, but Ferdinand’s hair is significantly longer here. He just hasn’t decided to throw it back into a ponytail yet, because he’s a rebel like that.
I can actually see Sigfried getting on his case about it.
S: “Can.. can you get that cut?”
F: “What?”
S: “Your hair. It’s too long. You sometimes look like a girl from behind.”
F: “I do not! And if it bugs you that much, I definitely not going to get it cut. I like it this way anyway.”
S: “Ergh, but… it’s so long… I can get you a good crew cut for cheap if you want.”
F: “No way, soldier boy. I’m keeping my wavy locks!”
Hahah I don’t know. Whatever.
I cannot believe I forgot to upload these! These doodles are back from… March, I do believe, when I was down in Florida. The bus rides from the resorts to the parks was a long one, so I doodled.
The first one was an idea to put Veronica in a Disney-esque dress. That evolved into wanting to put Ferdinand in a fancy schmancy suit with a cane. And they’re dancing. Because… DISNEY MAGIC. THAT’S WHY.
Anywho, the second was just a doodle of Veronica with the family dog, Chardonnay, a Newfoundland. I think this was on the plane ride back and I had been drawing dogs during that time.
A sketch I did up a while ago, for a print series, more or less, I didn’t bother to actually work on. I hope to finish this piece at one point though : )
Some sketches of a young Sigfried interacting with his over demanding father. I figured Armon would occasionally test the boy with a chess game or whatnot, being a game of strategy and patience. Also here is a sketch of the Clarke family, though note, the ages listed aren’t necessarily accurate, as I’ve changed things around.
But picture, going clockwise, we have Armon Clarke, head of the family, Scarlet Clarke, the eldest child, Sigfried, the youngest, and Lilian Clarke, the mother.
Scarlet is a typical older sister, in that she views her brother as a nuisance and doesn’t talk to him much. However, she does feel a little bit sorry for him, though of course, doesn’t understand the situation all that well, especially considering she has a somewhat warmer relationship with their father.
Lilian, isn’t your ideal mother either. She basically married for status, chosing Armon over one of his younger brothers, but she does try to be a good mother to her children, though Scarlet is spoiled and Sigfried is more or less neglected. She tries to understand the cause of all the tension in the household between the father and son, but knows better than to go against her husband and his standards.
Some sketches for class done of General Armon Clarke, Sigfried’s father and the previous Clarke General before Sigfried.
The first image is of Armon in his office, doing paper work and the other below it is a sketch of him playing chess, one of his few past times. The next image is of Armon in one of his weaker moments in his study, where he’s in one of his depressed states, usually caused by the stress of his job and the thought of his son’s health. The third image of is of Armon in his armor with two saluting underlings. The next three are just some face and expression tests/doodles. And the image after those is one of Armon visiting a local gypsy.
Some doodles of Sigfried, giving you guys some more insight on the poor boy’s situation.
The first page is of Sigfried at his desk, where he both works and sleeps at from time to time. The second image is of Sigfried gathering his books and ink for work and the third is him in the family library. The fourth image is of Sigfried during a point when he’s feeling more under the weather than usual, as well as him climbing over to his desk to work even when feeling low. The fifth image is just doodles of Sigfried looking out his window and through the bars of the gate that enclose the walls that surround the Clarke Estate.
Sketchy sketch I did up the other day, of course of a younger Ferdinand and Aylen. Being Charles daughter, Ferdinand and Aylen were very close and knew each other from quite a young age. They like to pick fun at each other of course.
NEW CHARACTERS YES.
You guys may recognize these two from the Instruments picture. As mentioned there, those two characters are Charles and Aylen, two important characters from Ferdinand’s childhood. This is a collection of sketches of the two of them. Charles doesn’t have as many doodles as Aylen, as I had a good idea in mind of how I wanted him to look, so I wasn’t messing with his design too much.
Aylen, however, was a character who was heavily on the fence up until recently, so her design got more thought put into it. Most of these doodles were just trying to figure out what her hair looked like.
Charles’ mother was a descendant of one of Variel’s native tribes, hence the piece of hair both Charles and Aylen wear on the right side of their face. Because of their tribal backgrounds, I wanted Aylen’s hair to maybe reflect that if I could, but the things I kept looking at or trying wasn’t working for me.
Again, probably more on these two later.
